Threads

Threads are the interdimensional fractures that allow FTL travel throughout our galaxy. The exact nature and origin of the Threads is unknown. There are 8 known types of threads, classified by what astrophysicists call their Factor, but may also refer to as “bandwidth” or “frequency” when referring to them for laymen.

The Threads, and the resulting “network” of them (colloquially called The Tangle by humans) are believed to have been constructed by an alien race known only as the Builders approximately a half a billion years ago.

Alpha Threads

Scientists are divided on if Alpha Threads are natural phenomena or a result of the construction or even degradation of the other Threads. Alpha threads run from a few miles in length to a few hundred million miles in length. They are in constant motion, drifting through the galaxy. Occasionally an Alpha thread can be found drifting through a system, and strategic use of it with a Needle Drive can allow in system FTL travel for a few months or years.

Beta Threads

Beta Threads are similar in length to Alpha Threads, but are “bound” at one end to the same mysterious force that binds the other threads to some star systems. The other end drifts freely, but far more predictable, and often used for in system FTL travel in the systems lucky enough to have one (or more). The most well known of the Beta threads are the 5 threads in the Cethalaran System.

Scientists believe that Beta threads are part of the degradation of the other types of threads.

Gamma Threads

Also known as Factor 1, Gamma Threads are thought to be the most degraded of the Threads, as they are the most difficult to tune a Needle Drive to, especially on larger ships.

Delta Threads

Also known as Factor 2

Epsilon Threads

Also known as Factor 3

Zeta Threads

Also known as Factor 4

Eta Threads

Also known as Factor 5

Theta Threads

Also known as Factor 6, Theta Threads are thought to be the least degraded and newest of the Threads, as they are the easiest to tune a Needle Drive to.
